Representing Black history and culture within a contemporary environment required an approach that was both deeply respectful and forward-looking. The challenge was not simply to tell stories, but to create a space that could honor generations of achievement while remaining adaptable to future voices and perspectives.

The Center for Black Excellence and Culture is a 37,500-square-foot cultural destination dedicated to celebrating Black history, achievement, and community while creating space for future generations to thrive. Through environmental graphics, interactive media, donor recognition, and culturally rooted storytelling, ZEBRADOG transformed architecture into a living expression of identity, resilience, and possibility.
Working closely with community leaders, stakeholders, and the Center’s visionaries, the ZEBRADOG team embraced cultural symbolism, layered storytelling, and interactive experiences to create an environment that feels both permanent and evolving. A place where Black excellence is celebrated, explored, and continually expanded.
Areas of Impact
Transforming Donor Recognition into Cultural Storytelling
Inspired by the djembe drum and its role in communication, celebration, and community, the donor recognition experience moves beyond a traditional donor wall. Large drum forms celebrate major campaigns while smaller drums recognize every contribution, reinforcing the idea that every gift contributes to a larger collective rhythm. Real African drums invite visitors to play the instrument directly, creating an experience that is both meaningful and memorable.
Culture expressed through light, pattern, and architecture
Adinkra symbols serve as a unifying visual language throughout the Center, culminating in the building’s iconic two-story glass feature. Rich with meaning and history, the symbols transform the architecture into a storytelling canvas where color and light animate the space, creating a powerful expression of identity visible both inside and outside the building.
Honoring masks from African Diaspora
A series of sculptural masks in the Center celebrate the artistic traditions and cultural heritage of the African diaspora. Acting as both symbolic markers and storytelling moments, these installations connect visitors to centuries of creativity, craftsmanship, and cultural expression while reinforcing themes of identity, ancestry, and pride.
Celebrating the Black Philanthropists who made the vision possible
This dynamic donor recognition experience highlights the individuals whose generosity helped bring the Center to life. Through a blend of physical and digital storytelling, visitors learn about the philanthropic journeys, leadership, and impact of major contributors. The experience reinforces a powerful message: Black excellence is strengthened by a legacy of investment, mentorship, and community support.
I Am Black Excellence: A vibrant expression of identity and belonging
Anchored by authentic Kente cloth woven in Ghana, this feature celebrates the richness and diversity of Black identity. Through color, pattern, and affirmational messaging, the installation invites visitors to see themselves reflected within the Center’s mission. The result is a bold statement of pride, belonging, and cultural continuity that connects local stories to global traditions.
Creating a digital archive for Discovering Black Wisconsin stories
Designed as a living digital archive, Discover Black Wisconsin provides visitors with opportunities to explore the people, places, achievements, and cultural influences highlighted throughout the Center. The platform extends storytelling beyond physical exhibits, ensuring new stories can be added and discovered for years to come.
